Some really nice additions to a huge bedroom
I'm really going to enjoy this one!
First the room. This is a huge master bedroom with plenty of wall space. All of 30' long, and at least 20' wide. Customers wanted some wardrobe units built in, or added as a permanent part of the room and stay with the existing theme. There will be 2 units on two different walls. A tall 3 section unit and a lowboy. The center section will have drawers and an open top, while the two wings will have some doors and open shelving. Behind one door will house 2 felt lined jewelry drawers and pendant carousel. The tall unit will have a bonnet over the center as the picture below, and will be finished in white lacquer to stay with the room settings.

The customer presented me with some ideas and we settled on a rough sketch. The center unit will stick out proud of the 2 side wings.

The only problem to deal with is the wall on the left and a door casing. The wings will be limited in depth to 19" and the first stile will set behind the casing. From this layout, now I can size all my rails. I like to use cut off of the actual material I will use for a more accurate take off.

doing a layout and story pole or "stick". I can take accurate measurements for rails and include any extra length needed for tenons. The cut list done, now its over to the shaper for the tenons

Now for the mortice in the stiles

now for a quick dry fit

next is the hood. I'll try and come close to the existing wardrobe in the sweep, and molded edge

now to trace it out on some wide stock, and cut the first molding and route the edge

repeat the same process with the top molding, and glue up. Of course, there are a few steps that went on that are not shown.

The initial moldings were sanded on my spindle sander, but the table I put on this one did a real nice job in the sanding. Especially on the end

Below is the center unit. I needed to make the top so I could set the top rail in place so it lines up with the door casing on installation

Tomorrow, out come the carving chisels

time to make some dental moldings that will be on the hood, and also some relief edge mold

almost ready to put this puppy together

Now for the glue up

and more clamps

a few more pieces, and ready to start the two end wings

time to stand this up and start some trim. First, cutting the bonnet molding
